"Small but special" is what one award citation said about Low Mill, and it's bang on. Just three rooms keep your stay on the intimate side, but what wonderful rooms they are, fashioned from an eighteenth-century watermill on the gushing riverside in Bainbridge, in the heart of Wensleydale, four miles from Hawes. There's no mistaking the building's heritage – owners Neil and Jane have restored the lot to working order, so the grindstones and cogs form a dramatic backdrop in the eye-popping guest lounge, while the wheel itself lies underneath the dining room (a tour by Neil, who did the work himself, is very much part of the experience).
There's a story to tell in every lavishly appointed room – the old 'Store Room' sits under gorgeous beams, while the 'Kiln Room' retains its vintage ceramic floor tiles where the grain used to be spread to dry. And if you think you're been-there-done-that as far as boutique goes, be prepared to swoon at 'The Workshop', which is an absolutely massive space running the length of the building, complete with winding gear and pulleys, wood-burner and free-standing copper bath. Low Mill is a chic affair all round, from polished wood floors and exposed stone walls to cheeky fabrics and designer bathrooms, and it's Ipod-docked, wi-fi-ed, flat-screen-TV-ed and fluffy-bath-robed up to its eyeballs. But style aside, there's comfort and fun here too, whether it's the deep, deep bedside rugs or the leopard and tiger standing guard in the lounge. Mornings see serious breakfasts, strong on local produce and outside is a riverside terrace and sitting areas where you can lay in wait for the visiting herons. Small but special indeed – well said Yorkshire Life.

The Owner Says
Following our Yorkshire Life Small but Special Accommodation of the Year award in 2012, we had an amazing 2013 with two more awards coming our way – in May 2013 we were named by the AA as their Guest Accommodation of the year for England 2013/14 at an awards ceremony at St Ermin's hotel in London. In November we were very proud to be named the winners of Yorkshire's White Rose B&B Accommodation of the Year in front of 1,000 people at the awards ceremony at New Dock Hall, Leeds.
