By dint of its unspoilt nature and its bountiful littoral many hotels on Scotland's west coast boast spectacular views, but romantic Loch Melfort Hotel is one of those in with a shout of having the best views of all. This cosy family-run four star sits way out west in the romantic wilds of Argyll, enjoying a vista alive with a sprinkling of islands that stretch off across the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The sunsets in this part of the world have to be seen to be believed. They are as warm and life affirming as the welcome from the accomplished and uber professional owners Calum and Rachel Ross, who are at the helm of an equally welcoming team.
The rooms in the characterful main hotel are our pick (there are comfortable lodge rooms too), with some of the large bedrooms having the best vistas from their large bay windows. They have designated dog friendly rooms at Loch Melfort. Downstairs a cosy bistro, lounge and restaurant await – you can always eat in one of the venues with your dog year round. Local produce is to the fore with the seafood a highlight. Superb wines are on hand too – look out for wine and food combining nights. Just outside you can amble about the grounds. A wee path leads down to their boathouse, where the intrepid can go for a swim in summer, with 17 acres of grounds to explore in total – ideal for rambles with your four legged friend. There is a kids' playground too. The big attraction next door is Arduaine Gardens, one of Argyll’s finest gardens, with tickets available from the hotel reception. Handily they are pet friendly too and the walks here are superb with a feast of domestic and exotic flora to take in as your dog has the time of its life.
