For a road trip to remember it doesn’t get much better than hiring a Land Rover Defender that’s kitted out for camping. These iconic vehicles are the cream of the crop when it comes to overland adventures, and hiring one from LandyCampers puts you in safe hands. You pick up your vehicle from their base in Essex, and the rest of the country is yours for the taking. Each Landy has a top-of-the-range Thule roof tent to sleep in and everything you need to survive your own safari closer to home. With a generous 125-mile daily allowance (averaged over the trip), that might be a weekend exploring East Anglia, a week cruising around Cornwall or even a fortnight’s road trip in Scotland.
The husband-and-wife team behind the business have spent years on their own overland adventures, and they've expertly honed the LandyCamper kit list. From the tent you’ll be sleeping in to towels and linen, everything you need is provided, making this as good for first-time campers as it is for seasoned adventurers. Each of their Defenders has a lounge area in the back, plus an awning and a table and chairs for sitting outside. There’s a double gas burner, a kettle, a coffee maker and a barbecue. Pots, pans, plates and cutlery are all provided. Even the washing-up liquid is thrown in. The kit is all weather-ready and chosen to be as weatherproof as possible, including thermal tent insulators and heated sleeping bags/mats when required. And, like everything in these Defenders, even that has been carefully sourced. There’s a real effort here to keep things as sustainable as a driving holiday in a diesel-powered 4x4 can be. Cleaning products are eco-friendly, there’s a solar panel providing power for the fridge, and every trip is carbon offset.
There are two Land Rovers to choose from: Waffle, a grey, year 2000 Defender that’s perfect for a couple; and Fern, a green 2001 Defender 110, that can – impressively – sleep up to six people. She has two roof-tent bedrooms and is the dog-friendly option, while Waffle is pet-free. Whichever you choose, and wherever you go, you can expect to be among the coolest campers on any campsite. Heads will turn as you arrive, and people will be wowed when you expertly pop your roof tents up in as little as three minutes. To achieve that, you’ll have had a thorough introduction to your LandyCamper by owners Max or Bela at pick-up. And they can offer plenty of tips for your trip too. Comprehensive insurance and breakdown cover are included as standard, so your trip is as stress-free and smooth as the ride. In terms of rates, Waffle (Defender 90) is from £195 per night, and Fern (Defender 110) from £225 a night. The minimum hire period for both is three nights.Gallery
