Top-end treehouses and a converted cowshed in a wild valley in Devon

Who knew a couple of treehouses and a converted cowshed could stake a claim for one of the most luxurious places to stay in Devon? Let us introduce you to the boutique retreats at Sleepy Owl. These high-end hideaways in the North Devon countryside have been built with seemingly wild abandon. There’s a gold roll-top bath in one of the treehouses and a copper one in the other that can be moved from inside to out, depending on weather or mood. They have underfloor heating, en-suite bathrooms, towels, slippers and robes.

There’ll be a bottle of fizz on the chill when you get here and your private woodfired hot tub can be pre-warmed for you as well. In fact, pretty much whatever you want can be arranged – a private chef, a massage, a popcorn machine so you can make the most of the big screen and projector. Did we mention those are here too? This place was definitely designed with luxury in mind, but it has all the practicalities too. Each of the treehouses and the cowshed are – underneath all the fun stuff – luxury self-catering places to stay.

All three options sleep up to four people (two adults and two kids), so while they're perfect for romantic retreats, they're fun places for families to stay too – plus, they're all dog-friendly. The treehouses both have separate bunk bedrooms, the cowshed has a twin; the master in the Nest Treehouse is the one with the gold bath and a sumptuous four-poster bed. It’s in Hideout that you’ll find the moveable copper bath; the only one of its kind in the UK. Each accommodation has been individually and thoughtfully designed to connect well with the outdoors. There’s outdoor seating, a barbecue, pizza oven and a hammock, as well as a hot tub.

Sleepy Owl’s accommodation is set among 20 acres of woodland and wildflower meadows, so there's plenty to explore during your stay. Despite being blissfully bucolic and secluded, there's a fine dining farmhouse restaurant a five-minute walk away, and the village of Hartland is walkable too. For a truly romantic retreat, it’s all you need, but, of course, this is Devon – and you're close to the Cornish border too – so beaches are an ever-present temptation. Pebbly Hartland Quay is just three miles away, while Sandymouth, Westward Ho! and Summerleaze beaches are all within half an hour’s drive.

Perfect stay in a perfect place

This was our second time back at Sleepy Owl and who knew that the first visit could be beaten. Jay and the team certainly looked after us well, even better than last time and we didn’t think that was possible. It’s become a permanent part of our annual visit to the southwest each year and the kids love it too; it is certainly my favourite place to escape to. I could write a lot about the whole area and The Hideout (Treehouse) but I would not spoil any surprises, just try it yourself, you will see why we love it. Keep up the good work and just keep doing what you are doing.
