The Viewmount
Highlands Inverness-shire Kingussie
- From £265 a night
- 4 Guest Rooms
- Boutique B&B
If you've come to the Scottish Highlands for the mountains and the views then The Viewmount is very definitely for you – a luxurious, five-star boutique B&B that's a passion project for its South African host, Esther – living (and sharing) the dream in her beautiful Victorian home.
The Viewmount is in the small Highlands town of Kingussie, surrounded by dramatic landscapes and located right in the Cairngorms National Park. Careful restoration has retained much of the Victorian feel, and the four ensuite rooms have decorative fireplaces, furniture in keeping with the period and a real sense of genteel comfort. There's a 'no children', 'no pets' policy, which helps maintain the peace and quiet, and the views are simply stunning, especially from 'The Bell' and 'The Leslie' rooms, where panoramic, triple-sash windows look out onto the Grampian Mountains. 'The Reid' is hardly less enticing, with mountain and garden views, while 'The Sharon' is a ground-floor, wheelchair-accessible room that looks out over the landscaped garden. All rooms have king-size beds with the Sharon offering the option of a twin configuration.
The ensuites are magnificent – gorgeous spaces with underfloor heating, walk-in showers and slipper baths (The Sharon also has a wheelchair-accessible shower and wide basin) – and there are lovely touches throughout, from monogrammed bathrobes and hospitality trays with Dalwhinnie whisky to bespoke lighting. There's nothing vintage about the facilities, though, as you'll find USB ports next to the beds and 55-inch smart TVs in the rooms, plus free Wi-Fi throughout the property.
Breakfast is fabulous, served in the Grampian View library at a time to suit and encompassing freshly-brewed coffee, homemade bread and an impressive pick-and-mix selection of specialities like venison sausages and devilled kidney beans. The property is licensed, too – Esther offers an honesty bar, where guests can purchase drinks by the bottle from her extensive wine list and settle on departure (there are card facilities). Afternoon tea is also an option, served to guests and visitors every Friday and Sunday, spanning finger sandwiches, freshly baked family recipe mini scones and gourmet sweets. In addition, Esther hosts events, including Valentine’s, Mother’s and Father’s Day, wine, gin and whisky tastings, and six-course tasting menus for lunch and dinner.
You'll need a car to get the best out of the location, which is perfectly sited for trips to some of the most famous Scottish Highland destinations – around 40 miles to either Inverness or Blair Atholl, for example, and around 50 miles to Fort William for Ben Nevis. There are local folk museums, clan sites and distilleries much closer at hand, as well as the charms of Kingussie itself, with its art and craft shops, wildlife park and monthly farmers' market. And – always – those extraordinary views that brought you here in the first place.
