This rural glampsite is in a scenic farmland setting on the outskirts of the North York Moors National Park, where peace and quiet and deep, dark skies await. You can pitch a tent or campervan on the rustic six-acre site at 700-year-old Baxby Manor – everyone gets a fire pit, and there are hot showers, sinks and toilets in a modern, spotless, heated facilities block. Chalet-style off-grid eco-pods, cute 'Hoglet' houses sleeping up to four, and deluxe 'Kabinas' take care of the glamping end of the market.

The wooden pods are low-key and eco-friendly – so, no electricity, and barbecue or camp-stove cooking only, but candles and lanterns are provided. Some sleep two adults and a dog, while others fit a pair of adults and two kids. Choose an eye-catching Hoglet house with a round door and curved roof and enjoy a wood burner for cold evenings, plus a camping stove and indoor seating. Some are pet-friendly. Raising the bar are the fully furnished wildflower meadow Kabinas sleeping up five, depending on whether you choose 'Classic' or 'Grande' – one of the latter is dog-welcoming. All come complete with your very own hot tub, bedding, towels, a wet room bathroom, ethical toiletries and large private decking. Peace and quiet are what you're promised and what you'll get – Baxby Manor definitely isn't for big groups, party people or late-night revellers, and there's a strict keep-it-down policy after 10pm.

It's the extras that really make this place – like the alpacas that sometimes come to visit, the farm eggs you can buy in the small on-site shop, or the fact the local butcher calls on request and there's a purpose-built spot for a bite to eat – The Pizza Shack – open every day during school holidays for breakfast, smoothies, coffee, and of course, homemade stone-baked pizzas. You're a short walk from Husthwaite village (a couple of miles off the A19), where there's a pub and a shop, and nearby attractions include Coxwold (2.5 miles away), Thirsk (9 miles) and Sutton Bank (12 miles), so the location's great for the west side of the North York Moors National Park. Also check out their fabulous self-catering treehouse, Rufus's Roost, situated nearby.

Nearby

It's a 5 minute walk from the campsite into the village of Husthwaite, one of many old settlements around here that appeared in the Domesday Book and still reflect their history in Norman churches and exposed Tudor beamed buildings. Families staying in range of the campsite will find a tennis court here, along with a pleasant pub (Plum & Partridge). If you're looking to avoid the car there are plenty of great walks and cycle routes that link up the various villages. Elsewhere, though, its 3 miles to Shandy Hall (01347 868465), home of picaresque novelist Laurence Sterne, and a little further to Byland Abbey (01347 868614), formerly one of the greatest early Gothic buildings in northern England, now left in magnificent ruins since the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. Other top attractions in the vicinity include Duncombe Park (01439 770213) and must-see Rievaulx Abbey (01439 798228) – both within the North York Moors National Park (01439 772700) and approx 5 miles away.

Getting There

The site is quite hard to find and you can't rely on Sat Nav to get here alone. From the North, take the  A1/A19 to Thirsk and follow the signs to York. Continue south on the A19, ignoring the first turn-off at large crossroads and carrying on through the village of Thormanby Turn left after 2 miles (signed Husthwaite, Coxwold, and 12th century church) and Baxby Manor is 2 miles on the left opposite a cemetery, immediately before the village sign of Husthwaite. From the south, follow the A19 north from York for around 15 miles, past Easingwold, and make a right 1 mile past the second Easingwold by-pass roundabout (signed Husthwaite, Coxwold, and 12th century church). Baxby Manor is 2 miles on the left opposite a cemetery and immediately before the village sign of Husthwaite.

Trains to either York or Thirsk and then Stephensons of Easingwold Bus Service to Husthwaite. Check their websites for timetables.
