Fancy living the life of a fancy shepherd without all the bother of looking after sheep? The two luxury shepherds huts at Somerset's Old Rectory House are bang on the money, overlooking fields of sheep and with stunning views down to the nearby Jurassic coast, less than 10 minutes walk away.
The two huts – Charlotte and Dotty – are very cute, clad in oak and cleverly fashioned to make the most of the space. There's a pull-down double bed over a seating area at one end, wood-burner at the other, plus a fully furnished kitchenette and a mains-connected bathroom with electric shower and flushing toilet. They may be small, but you're certainly not losing out in facilities, especially as outside you have your own wood-fired hot tub, which is a very nice way to finish the day after a tramp on the beach or a hike in the nearby Quantock Hills. The kitchen is set up to be able to cook full meals but there's also a Kadai firebowl at each hut, which you can use as a barbecue – or you are welcome in the house grounds where there's a firepit and chimenea. If you can't be bothered with any of that, you're still fine – there's a great farm shop on site, with breakfast packs and home-cooked meals available.
It's a cosy, romantic sort of place, ideal for a quiet getaway as a couple. On the property there's a walled orchard and wildflower meadow, and you can walk either to the closest beach or the local pub in around 15 minutes. The Coach House holiday cottage is on the same site too, where there's the same relaxed sense of style and luxury throughout – though with the added bonus of a private pool.
Further afield, you're looking at drives into the Quantock Hills or down to the coast, or a visit to the National Trust's Dunster Castle. They're hot on the local produce hereabouts – you get a complimentary pack in the hut – so maybe a trip to the local cider farm is in order too. After a drop or two there, you'll be even more thankful you don't have any sheep to worry about.
