Positioned in a wonderful location on the edge of Exmoor National Park, Middle Stone Farm is more or less literally in the middle-of nowhere. However, that's not the only reason we like this this patch of prime west Somerset countryside. We also love its accommodation, which includes a super-comfortable cabin and a holiday cottage which together make a perfect self-catering complement to the site's six safari lodges – and one which is available all year round. You also have the option to take the whole site so it's an ideal place for large groups.

First the cute Deckhouse Cabin, which is a white-washed pavilion-style cabin in its own corner of the farm, popular with couples although it can sleep up to four people in a king-sized bed and separate bunk room. The retro feel of the open-plan living space makes a nice contrast to the modern shower room and the wood-burning stove. There is a private wood-burning hot tub near the fire pit and barbecue area outside, and glorious views of open farmland. It's also plenty private enough, with a fenced garden with picnic table and firepit, hammock, orchard with fairy lights, and it's couple friendly - offering couple discounts. There's a wall hung TV with freeview (radio is integrated, there's a solar wind up radio too).  The second property, Stable Cottage, sleeps 2 adults and 2 young children and is furnished with a mix of traditional and contemporary furniture – comfy sofas, colourful rugs and pictures, along with a slate floor and beams in the open-plan living room. It too has a wood-burning stove, along with a modern kitchen and uncluttered bedrooms with brass bedsteads and colourful quilts. Outside there’s a small raised fenced patio with private hot tub, seating area and barbecue and views around the farm. The cottage has wifi throughout, a wall hung TV with freeview and integrated DVD player, radio is also integrated, and central heating is provided by the farm’s biomass boiler.  Not only featuring their biomass boiler, but all of their accommodation is eco-friendly, with solar panels, a private water source, all wood being sourced from sustainable woodland too.

Whichever property you choose, Middle Stone Farm is in some ways a tourist attraction in itself, especially if you have young children, with with rare-breed pigs and sheep, goats, chickens and alpacas roaming around, and farm tours available by tractor. There’s also table tennis, badminton and football as well as two children’s play areas, and overall an unpretentious, backcountry atmosphere that is ideal for couples' breaks and family holidays. If you’re here for a weekend, the appeal of the on-site attractions might just stop you from exploring the countryside around, but it would be a pity to miss the ponies and moorlands of Exmoor, not to mention nearby Dunster Castle and its sub-tropical gardens or the fishing village of Porlock Weir. Why not forget forget about a weekend and book yourself in for a week instead?!

Deckhouse Cabin - top-class weekend break

The deckhouse cabin was fantastic. The log burner kept the whole cabin really hot and cosy in the mid-November cold. The whole cabin layout was fantastic - bedroom was big and comfy enough, with plenty of extra covers if needed. The local farm produce - eggs, sausages, bacon, bread, apple juice - is absolutely delicious. The wood-fired hot tub was absolutely immense and really easy to self-heat, and the views from the hot tub and everywhere else on the plot are really stunning. A big thanks to Catherine and Patrick for a perfect stay, and we will definitely book another stay. A very happy and refreshed Tam & Ann.

The perfect holiday for our little family of 4

Wonderful stay in the cottage with our 2-year-old and 4-month-old for our first family holiday. Catherine and Patrick are such warm and welcoming hosts who made us feel really at home. Everything is so well thought out, even down to including a toy box for kids. We all loved the farm tour and tractor ride, and it's clear Catherine and Patrick are so passionate and knowledgeable about what they do and their enthusiasm shines through. The farm shop has everything you need including the best sausages we've ever tasted! We weren't sure if it was worth paying for the hot tub, knowing there was the possibility that our lovely children wouldn't sleep well enough for us to get out and use it, but even if we'd only used it one night (we used it most nights in the end), it was so worth the money - so relaxing, quiet, calm and the perfect way to switch off after lots of exploring during the daytime. We were lucky enough to have some really clear nights too, so the stars were incredible. Thank you for such a perfect stay.

Another wonderful visit

This is the fifth time we have visited ... and we are already wondering when we can go back! Just such a relaxing and beautiful farm. Catherine and Patrick are always so lovely and helpful with lots of little touches from thoughtful decor to flowers/produce from the farm. The home-cooked meals are really delicious - amazing home-baked bread too. The children are free to roam in the play areas and say hello to the animals - it was all a bit famous five when we were last there! Just idyllic and so nice to explore Exmoor too. Thank you for a lovely stay as always.

We spent 5 days here over the Easter weekend, and honestly, this place is amazing. The owners are so friendly, and everything about the site is lovely.

Deckhouse Cabin - great location and facilities

What a fantastic place. We stayed in the Deckhouse Cabin during the February half term. My family of 4 (2 adults, 2 boys aged 8 and 6) loved it. Everything was there for us, and the position of the cabin was lovely, with unbroken views of the fields. It's located about 30 metres away from the farm cottages and has its own parking and fenced gardens, so the kids were safe. The interior is a good layout for a family - a bedroom each end of the lounge/dining area. The log burner heated the rooms up well and the hot tub was good fun - you can easily moderate the temperature for young kids. Around the site, the play areas were of good quality and good views of the hills. Plenty of space to kick a football about. I would recommend the cabin - everything was there and worked without hitch. The boys loved the farm tour and learnt a lot from it.
