The Dunes Hotel
North West England Cumbria Barrow-in-Furness
- From £85 a night
- 40 Guest Rooms
A dog-friendly hotel on the Furness Peninsula, just south of the Lake District
The dunes are part of a national nature reserve that neighbours nearby Roanhead Beach, which is oh-so-close to The Dunes Hotel. The views, when you get there, make the short walk worth it: a sandy expanse that gives way to the Duddon Estuary, all backed by Cumbrian mountains. Back at the hotel, it’s countryside views out of the window and seaside vibes inside. The Coast Bar and Restaurant take up much of the ground floor and open out to a terrace. Rope, wickerwork and wood that looks artfully sun-bleached all feature in these contemporary, well-connected spaces, which are made more luxurious by upholstery, brass and lighting that together, add to the nautical feel. There are menus for cocktails, pizzas, afternoon teas and à la carte dinners – as well as one for kids.
All the guest rooms at The Dunes are excellent value, so it’s worth spending the little extra that gives you the added space and more sumptuous feel of their suites. But whether you choose one of those, a family room or a clean and simple classic, you’ll find the basics are covered. There’s WiFi, a flatscreen TV, toiletries and tea and coffee-making facilities included in every one. You'll also be pleased to know that this is a hotel where families and dog owners are just as welcome as couples.
The dog-friendly beach is the closest local attraction, but there’s Furness Abbey too, just two miles away, and Piel Island, which isn't much further – a speck of land off the peninsula’s southern tip that's home to a castle and a pub. However, most people who stay here will be visiting for what’s just up the road – The Lake District National Park. Everything within reach and the Southern Lakes in particular are yours to explore, with Lake Windermere, Coniston Water and the villages and fells around 30 minutes away by car.
