Lakeland Motor Museum
Old Blue Mill Backbarrow LA12 8TA
The Lake District’s newest blockbuster museum traces the history of the automobile. Dull? Not on your life, since inside the enormous blue hangar there’s a fascinating collection of classic cars and vintage vehicles, not to mention boneshaker bikes, tin toys and an entire recreated 1930s garage. It’s an impressive affair, sited in handsome riverside buildings – there’s a café with a waterside deck – and with a separate section dealing with the speed-freak Campbell family, Sir Malcolm and son Donald, who broke many land and water speed records in their famous Bluebird racing machines.
