Take the cruise boat down from Ambleside or Bowness to Lakeside, at the foot of Windermere, and you can jump on the quayside steam trains of the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway for a gentle four-mile chug through the woods and along the River Leven. There’s a tea room (and parking) at the other end of the line, Haverthwaite Station, and usually a steam engine or carriage to examine before making the return journey. For the best deal buy a combined cruise-and-train ticket, available at cruise piers or the train station.
