Walkers, golfers and those simply looking to relax will be equally at home at The Springs. Rock music fans might also get a kick out of a visit to this country hotel just outside Wallingford. That’s because this hotel was once owned by Ian Gillan of Deep Purple. The guitar-shaped swimming pool may have gone but don’t worry, there’s still a pool in the hotel’s tranquil spa. There’s also a golf course, gym and restaurant. Situated on The Ridgeway National Trail, not far from the River Thames and half an hour outside of Oxford, it’s a great base for visiting any or all of them.
The Springs certainly has wide appeal, and its range of rooms, suites and self-catering lodges make it even broader. Families are as welcome as couples and you can even bring your dog. Reception, the spa and guest suites are housed in a mock Tudor building that was the original hotel, dating from 1893. Now owned and operated by Darwin Escapes, it’s been thoroughly modernised inside, with communal spaces that are as colourful as they are characterful. There’s panelling that matches the half-timbered façade and architrave that nods to the age of the place, but it’s all been brought up to date with bright colours, contemporary art and plush upholstery.
The guest suites upstairs are equally well-designed and appointed, and some feature roll-top baths. An alternative to staying in the main building is a deluxe room with a terrace or a self-catering lodge. These are separate, modern buildings in the grounds with a very different feel. The design here is all clean lines with a contemporary finish. The colour scheme is more neutral and there’s a stronger connection to the outdoors. The self-catering lodges have separate bedrooms and well-equipped kitchens, and sleep up to four guests.
Whichever option you go for, you can choose your board basis as well: room only or with meals in The Ridgeway Restaurant. That’s housed in the former golf club building and reminds you what else is here – an 18-hole golf course plus a national trail providing a great place for countryside walks from the front door.
