In a town that’s known as ‘the gateway to the islands’ and ‘the seafood capital of Scotland’, it would be hard to find a better place to stay than the Manor House – an elegant hotel in a Georgian building on the south side of Oban Bay, with views across to the Isle of Mull. It has steps down to the shore and a small but excellent restaurant with local produce from land and sea as a highlight of its menu. The ferries to those alluring islands are just a walk away, but island-hopping isn't the only thing to do. In fact, anything you’ve come to Scotland for is most likely in reach of here – castles, lochs, Celtic heritage and beaches all included – and there’s a whisky distillery in town, too.
You can also opt for your own tasting in the hotel bar which serves a good selection. That’s right, although there are just 11 guestrooms, The Manor House has a bar as well as a great restaurant, plus an inviting drawing room with an open fire, a terrace and a garden. The communal spaces give the place a sociable feel where tales of the day’s adventures are often shared. What’s on offer here is something akin to the experience of a grand country house hotel, but on a smaller and friendlier scale.
Built in 1780 by the fifth Duke of Argyll, the building certainly has the heritage that you’d expect of such a place. Period furniture and character features are enhanced with wallpapers, paintings and fabrics that suit the building’s age. That’s continued in the cosy bedrooms, each of which is individually designed and has en-suite facilities and everything else you’d expect of a modern hotel room, including a Smart TV in most rooms and good WiFi throughout.
When local folk have occasion to celebrate, they’ll book a table for dinner in The Manor House restaurant, preceded by drinks in the bar or on the terrace. With that in mind, there seems little point in guests wandering further than downstairs to eat (breakfast is included, while dinner needs to be booked).
When you eventually do decide to venture forth, a wealth of staggeringly beautiful sights await. The isles of Kerrera, Lismore and Mull are all worthy day trips, as are visits to Loch Etive, Ganavan Sands and the ruins of Dunollie Castle. None is more than 15 minutes’ drive away.
