Southern Scotland
Southern Scotland is a large area, stretching from the English border up through the largely rural regions of Ayrshire, Dumfries & Galloway and the Borders to the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh on its northern fringes. It's a gentle region by Scottish standards, beautiful in a low-key way, and rich in history. It's perhaps inevitably dominated by the country's two principal cities, but the towns of the Borders, in particular Melrose with its abbey and the nearby Abbottsford home of Sir Walter Scott, the handsome Tweed-side town of Peebles, and artsy Kirkcudbright on the river Dee in Dumfries & Galloway – famous location of cult movie 'The Wicker Man and home to the annual Wickerman music festival – can give any town in Scotland a run for their money.
