Let’s be honest, you’ve not spent the night on a superyacht, have you? Or indeed on an old working Scottish lighthouse supply boat? So you’re going to love Fingal, which was once the latter before it had a £5-million overhaul and was reborn as a luxury, five-star floating hotel permanently moored on Edinburgh’s waterfront. Its sister ship is the Royal Yacht Britannia, which means no expense – or attention to detail – was spared, which is obvious the minute you step aboard.
It’s now a pretty glamorous experience all round, from cosy ‘classic’, lamp-lit cabins to stunning duplex sleeping spaces with a spiral staircase. There’s beautiful panelling and warm Scottish colours throughout, plus circular windows, mosaic rain-showers, brass-tap bathrooms, and underfloor heating. The stylish restaurant and bar has floor-to-ceiling windows, attentive staff, and a menu that runs from afternoon tea to cocktails and dinner. Meanwhile, a stroll on the decks means a glass of champagne as the sun goes down over Leith and the Firth of Forth.
