The stunning baronial brownstone opposite Glasgow Cathedral and Necropolis is a fine city landmark – a small, family-owned boutique hotel with just eight rooms in one of the city's most favoured locations (literally everything is on your doorstep). It was built as a release hostel for female prisoners, of all things, and later used by the Cathedral, but you wouldn't know its history by looking at it. Each room has been individually designed and decorated, to make the most of the quirky building, like the cosy top-floor loft with its sloping ceiling, built-in bed and rooftop views. Or go 'Grand,' with magnificently wide beds and fabulous views from all sides. The calm, pared-back colour schemes are delightful, the bathrooms spot-on, and if you've ever wondered what the true mark of a Scottish boutique hotel is, it's a tea tray with Tunnocks biccies on it. Need to know – all the bedrooms are on the upper floor, reached by winding staircase, and there's no lift.
The Cathedral's not-so hidden secret weapon is Celentano's, the Italian-inspired restaurant that provides their in-house dining. It's a real oasis of calm, with a bar and garden, and an upstairs dining room with more of those classic Cathedral views. It's a seasonally led, zero-waste, nose-to-tail place, with regularly changing menus – and you should definitely book to eat if you're staying, so you get the full Cathedral experience.
