Afternoon teas don’t come any more deliciously British than in the elegant ground-floor brasserie of The Harte & Garter Hotel. Tall, aristocratic windows overlook the High Street and Castle, allowing you to gaze out on the hoi polloi as you feast on cucumber sandwiches and sweet fancies piled high on cake stands. If you want something more substantial, there’s also a robustly English menu of steaks, grills and roasts, plus Eton Mess or Pimm’s cheesecake to fill any gaps. Old fashioned bliss.
