Beamish Museum
Beamish DH9 0RG
If your children aren’t overly enthusiastic about their history lessons at school, bring them to Beamish and you’ll soon transform them into history buffs. This wonderful open-air ‘living museum’, just 12 miles northwest of Durham, recreates County Durham as it was in the years 1825 and 1913 – ie, pre-Industrial Revolution and post-Industrial Revolution. You’re free to wander round the thoughtfully reconstructed shops and houses, chatting to the costumed guides. You can also help feed the pigs in the farmyard and ride on the tram – in such bucolic surroundings you won’t want to return to the present day.
