Barrel Inn
Bretton, Near Eyam, Hope Valley, S32 5QD.
Ok. From the off I'm fessing up; this used to be one of our under-age drinking dens in the dim and distant past (when such things weren't frowned upon, and driving with L plates on wasn't a punishment offence) but it's just as cosy and welcoming now as it was then. Think inglenook fireplaces, beams, comfy settles and old skool horse brasses on rough plaster walls. The beer's great (regulars include Marstons Pedigree and Tim Taylors) the food is plentysome and good value for money, and to top it all off there's a brilliant flagged yard at the front to sit out on the odd warm day. It's pretty high here so those days are rare, but hardy souls don't seem to mind - the times I've been up and folk are sat out in hats and fleeces, mainly because the view over Hucklow towards Buxton is stupendous. The gliding club is just over the hill and it's a chucking-off point for paragliders so there's plenty to watch; there are fabulous walks from here too - what better place to end a five mile yomp?
