The charm of an old farmstead combines with the conveniences of modern life at Wheeldon Trees Farmhouse in the Peak District. Situated high in the peaceful countryside of the Upper Dove Valley, it offers a stylish and comfortable place for up to six guests with beautiful views, fantastic walking from the doorstep and a private garden with its own hot tub. Located six miles from Buxton and eight from charming Bakewell, it’s the largest of ten holiday cottages that have been lovingly converted from former farm buildings at Wheeldon Trees.
The stone farmhouse and cottages are arranged around a courtyard and are perfectly at home in this landscape of limestone crags and rolling dales. But a flash of colour here and a quirky gate there give a hint at what’s inside. Wheeldon Trees Farmhouse has been renovated to a high standard with nods to its heritage alongside design-led flair. Exposed beams, stonework and flagstone floors sit alongside leather sofas, sumptuous soft furnishings, bespoke wallpaper and contemporary lights to create a luxurious feel. The kitchen is the centre of any farmhouse and that’s no different here thanks to a modern range cooker and a large wooden table that seats up to eight. Upstairs, where the flagstone floors give way to deep-piled carpet, there are three bedrooms. The master room has an en-suite bathroom while the other two, with super-king-size beds which can be converted into twins, share a bathroom with a roll top bath.
The farmhouse can sleep a family or three couples but also works well as the central space for larger groups who want to rent more than one property here. The other nine cottages are smaller each sleeping between two and five and while they offer cosier, more open-plan living they deliver the same attention to detail. That means Egyptian cotton bed linen, fluffy white towels, White Company toiletries and crockery by Denby, who are based not far from here.
A welcome bag of local goodies continues the Derbyshire theme and, alongside it, you’ll find advice on places to visit — though inspiration is not hard to find when the views are as good as these. You can hike straight up nearby hill, High Wheeldon, for a full panorama of the national park and electric bikes are available to borrow so you can pootle with power, around stone-walled country lanes. There are two pubs are within peddling distance and Buxton, Bakewell and magnificent Chatsworth House are all easy drives from here.
