Stoke Gabriel
Stoke Gabriel Devon TQ9
Close to but a world away from the bustle of Torquay and Paignton, Stoke Gabriel is one of the most picturesque of the South Hams villages, a jumble of pretty houses that straddle a steep slope above the River Dart. In fact the village sits above a broad tributary of the Dart which has been dammed to make an ideal lake for kayaking and crabbing, and there are beautiful walks to be had around the waters. The River Shack café-restaurant by the dam is the place to head for a coffee, a drink or pizza, while up in the village the wood-panelled Church House Inn serves local cider and good-value pub grub.
