Chambercombe Manor
Chambercombe Lane Ilfracombe, Devon EX34 9RJ
Hour-long tours explore this cluster of buildings on the edge of Ilfracombe, whose name was recorded in the Domesday Book. The dark wood furnishings, low ceilings and leaning walls make them quirky buildings for a poke around. Though a latter-day farmhouse, it still retains its Tudor architectural grandeur – and its ghosts. They say a body was walled up in a chamber and only discovered in 1865. Ghost tours (£35) are held on Wednesday evenings in July and August, taking you through the haunting past. The rest of the week it's up to you to scare yourself, or simply enjoy exploring the manor in peace.
