Pretty farm cottages in beautiful countryside close to the North Devon coast
At Higher Mullacott Farm, four self-catering cottages are positioned around a courtyard in three-acres of gardens and grounds which look out over Devon countryside down to the sea. It’s a lovely little enclave, tucked away in a North Devon valley, but only a mile outside the seaside town of Ilfracombe and the same distance from the clifftop village of Mortehoe. The golden sands and surf of Woolacombe are only three miles away. Staying here puts you in a great location to explore all this, but the place itself is pretty special too. This former 17th-century farmhouse and its out-buildings have been thoughtfully converted into charming places to stay – you can hire an individual cottage or book out the whole lot for a large group holiday, sleeping an impressive total of 29.
The Farmhouse itself, which sleeps up to 10 in five bedrooms, is perhaps the most charming property of all. It’s the only one with original flagstone floors, a range cooker and an inglenook fireplace, but it sets the tone for all others. These holiday cottages offer a taste of authentic country living with mod cons and comfort added in. Exposed brickwork can be seen in all the cottages, beams in all but Poppy’s Barn. That’s the smallest cottage, sleeping two in an upside down arrangement with her single bedroom on the ground floor. She’s as old as the others but has the most modern style.
Her bigger sister is the largest of the lot: Dolly’s Barn with six bedrooms sleeping up to 11. Like The Farmhouse, it has a handy en-suite ground-floor bedroom, making it perfect for family stays with any relatives who struggle with stairs. It’s thoughtful touches like this that makes this place so family friendly. Travel cots and zed-beds can be added, some of the beds are zip-and-link so can be configured as doubles or twins. Aggie’s Cottage is the fourth and final cottage, sleeping up to six in three bedrooms.
All these holiday cottages share an outlook on the courtyard and access across all of the garden and grounds which will help make your holiday memories. There’s a field for ball games, a children’s play area, table tennis, a volleyball net and a beach hut stuffed with gear. The body boards, crabbing nets and buckets and spades will be handy when you make the short trip to one of the nearby beaches on this lovely stretch of Devon’s coast – which, by the way, includes the South West Coast Path, just a mile away.
