RockFish Seafood & Chips
8 South Embankment Dartmouth Devon TQ6 9BH
This cool and casual eatery from food writer, restaurateur and fishmonger Mitch Tonks is a fun, relaxed place for fish lovers, especially those with children. It's set just across the road from Dartmouth harbour, and sports fine views of the water from its front tables. The fish is fresh each day, and the line–caught battered cod and haddock with chips is a firm favourite naturally, but they also do homemade prawn burgers, a delicious choice of oysters, a signature crab roll made with South Devon crab and lots of local seasonal fish including Bay whiting, monkfish, red gurnard and Brixham plaice fillet. Your meal will be served in paper inside a metal basket, which is kind of fun, but if you're a crockery sort of person, and especially if you've chosen a posher fish dish, just ask when you order and they'll give you a plate. There are side orders of mushy peas, coleslaw or Greek salad, but don't come here if you don't like fish – for meat-eaters it's a burger or nothing, while veggies have to stick to small side salads, albeit served with Rockfish's excellent chips. They're licensed too, and there's a quenching selection of fish-matching European wines, local bears and ciders, and a soft drinks menu that includes fresh milkshakes. High chairs and baby changing are available, children's packs help keep the kids in their seats, and, best of all, you can draw all over the paper table cloths (adults quite like this too). No booking required - just pitch up. There's a takeaway nearby too, at 28 Lower St.
