Blackgang Chine
Near Ventnor PO38 2HN
A delightfully idiosyncratic mishmash of attractions in 40 acres of Victorian gardens audaciously clinging to an eroding cliff edge, Blackgang Chine is a huge favourite with children – and appreciated by adults for its inspired creativity and the incredible panoramas of the South Wight. The rides are fine, but be sure not to miss the BBC Coast exhibition. This tells the story of the island’s coastline with an excellent video, complete with groundshaking landslide effects, explaining how the village of Blackgang has slowly disappeared into the sea. A fun extra is the cleverly lit walk-through whale skeleton, discovered in 1842.
