Dimbola Lodge
Terrace Lane Freshwater PO40 9QE
If you care about photography, or you simply like stunning original images, then Dimbola Lodge is a visual feast. The collections contained in this unassuming Victorian villa are eye-popping. Permanently displayed are the captivating works of Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron – including a recently discovered portrait of Alfred Lord Tennyson. Cameron changed the face of portrait photography and Dimbola, where she lived for most of her time as a photographer, is almost a shrine to her memory. Also on display is a visual archive of all the Isle of Wight pop festivals, with wonderful images of Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and others, and there’s a constantly changing programme of exhibits and events too. One of the island’s cultural beacons.
