The Balmer Lawn Hotel & Spa stands just outside Brockenhurst in the middle of the New Forest National Park. It has a great location, a grand name and a past history as a 19th-century hunting lodge — and yet it’s also homely. Yes, it’s a country house hotel with a sensational spa, a two-AA rosette restaurant and afternoon teas on offer, but it’s not at all stuffy. And just to prove it, there are family rooms, a bike shed and dogs are also welcome.

This 56-room country hotel has been owned by Alison and Chris Wilson for more than 25 years. They lead a friendly team who are seemingly always happy to help, whether you’re at reception asking for the best local walks, in the Saltus Spa having a hot stone massage or being attentively waited on at dinner. The place has two options for that – the more formal Beresfords Restaurant and the al fresco Lodge Restaurant and Bar. They share a well-curated wine list and an a la carte menu with plenty of seasonal, local options.

Rooms here range from the super luxurious, with a four-poster bed and a balcony overlooking the forest to great-value standard rooms. There are family rooms and interconnecting options as well; all with en-suite bathrooms and the inclusions you would expect. What’s brilliant about the Balmer Lawn Hotel is that it offers a ‘look before you book’ opportunity, where for a small charge you can choose not just room type but the specific room you want to be based in. You know exactly what to expect thanks to floor plans and excellent photography. You’ll see that some bedrooms are more classic than contemporary and some are the other way around. All are, however, elegant and neatly finished.

The style downstairs is New Forest country hotel through and through. There’s wood panelling on the walls, tartan carpets on the floors, log burners in fireplaces and antler chandeliers hanging from ceilings. It’s a lovely, warm place to return to after days out walking and sightseeing in the surrounding national park. Brockenhurst is less than a mile down the road, Lyndhurst a five-minute drive and Beaulieu not much further. And let’s not forget there’s a spa right here on site with a Jacuzzi, a sauna, a small leisure pool and another (seasonal) one outside.

Getting There

From the M27, take the slip road on to the A337 towards Lyndhurst. In Lyndhurst at the T-junction, turn left on to the High Street (A35) continuing to follow signs for the A337. Turn Right on to Gosport Lane (still the A337/A35) towards Brockenhurst and continue to follow for two further miles after which the hotel is signposted on the left. Brockenhurst train station is a mile from the hotel. There's also a bus stop just outside the gates.
