Yarmouth Castle
Quay Street Yarmouth PO41 0PB
Everyone loves Yarmouth Castle, Henry VIII’s seafront bastion guarding against foreign invasion, completed in 1547. As compact as the town itself, it overlooks a strait that was once notorious for wrecking ships. Today, incorporated into the castle’s warren-like innards, there is a fascinating wreck exhibition and a number of historical recreations showing how the castle operated. Up on the castle’s rooftop green, a picnic by the huge cannon, overlooking the Solent, makes the perfect start (or conclusion) to an IoW visit.
