Bivouac Café
Bivouac at Druid's Temple Masham North Yorkshire HG4 4JZ
We can't think of a cooler place for a cup of coffee or a meal on this side of the Dales – the glam-campers' haven that is the Bivouac has an on-site café that's open to walkers, visitors and guests alike, and the panoramic view from the terrace is a beauty. Inside, it's the same rustic-chic set-up as the rest of the place – handmade furniture, old oak beams, rough stone walls, chunky ceramic crockery and real tea-pots – while the menu is a fresh, modern-Med line-up of items, from lamb burger with hand-cut chips to caramelised-onion-and-brie quiche. It's all pretty much free-range and Fair Trade, with breakfast served from 9am, and lunch from noon – and there's a family den area too, so it's a good target in the rain. If you need a walk, you can park up, visit the café and then hike up the track to the Druid's Temple, around twenty minutes away – the kids will love that too. Watch out for Bivouac music evenings as well – folkies, singer-songwriters and acoustic artists trek up here regularly to play to an appreciative local crowd.
