Church Street
Church Street Whitby
The old town on Whitby's east side is the best place for traditional gifts and souvenirs, from thick fishermen's jumpers (ganseys) to jewellery made from jet (a hard, black, natural carbon). Long, cobbled Church Street, parallel Sandgate and the little market square (where there’s a farmers' market every Thursday) can be a bit of a scrum on weekends and holidays. But there are some tucked-away alleys with intriguing names (like Arguments Yard) in between hippy-dippy New Age emporiums, tearooms, and clothes and accessories shops.
