When the tide's out Whitby revels in three miles of fine sand beach, stretching from the harbour entrance down to the little hamlet of Sandsend (where there's a pub, the Hart Inn – a good target for a longer walk). A few donkeys in summer, a café or two and a row of colourful beach huts comprise the beach facilities, but who needs any more on a blue-skied day with white clouds scudding across the sea? At any time of the year you'll also see hardy surfers out catching the waves – this part of the north Yorkshire coast is a well-known surf hangout.
