Thackray Museum
Beckett Street, Leeds LS9 7LN
Trace the story of medicine in one of the UK’s most enterprising – and gruesome – museums, where amputations, operations and frankly horrendous medical procedures are presented in a Horrible History kind-of-way, to great appreciation from any children in your party. Advances in medicine since the 1800s are covered in highly entertaining fashion, from childbirth to plastic surgery. And if you come over faint, the museum is handily placed right next door to the city’s St James’ Hospital, known to all as ‘Jimmy’s’, where the care is, thankfully, of the 21st-century variety.
