For contemporary lodgings with bit more of a soul, try Quebecs, which occupies the grand old premises of the city’s former Liberal Club – all Victorian red brick, stained glass, carved oak and gorgeously cosy rooms and lounges. Guest rooms tend to be on the stately and vintage side of boutique, although space can be tight unless you’re in for an upgrade or a suite. No two rooms are the same though, and all make the most of the building's high ceilings and big windows. Our favourite corner? Up the oak staircase and under the stained glass in The Gallery, settling down for a drink before bed.
