Kirkgate Market
Vicar Lane, Leeds LS2 7HY
No surprise in commercial, go-ahead Leeds to find a thriving market – and Kirkgate is one of the biggest indoor markets in Europe, housed in an impressive Edwardian market building as well as a separate outdoor market area, housing 600 stalls in all. It’s probably not true that you can find anything here, but you can have a damn good go, whether you want to get a tattoo, buy a halal chicken, try on a sari or just stock up on toilet rolls. And, for fact fans: this is where one Michael Marks opened his Penny Bazaar in 1884, making Leeds the original home of Marks & Spencer.
