Art’s
42 Call Lane, Leeds LS1 6DT
Hard to believe, but there was a time (ooh, say back in the early 1990s) when Leeds didn’t have any café-bars. And then came Art’s, flying the flag for good coffee, proper food and local art (exhibitions change every few weeks). It’s still there, and many retain a soft spot for the old place: it’s more restaurant than café, these days, but you’re still welcome for a cappuccino or a drink and a read of the paper. The menu is a joyous, seasonal British romp – think venison shepherd’s pie, hake on saffron mash, or crab and cockle chowder – and there’s a great early-bird deal if you eat before 7pm.
