The Tetley Bar & Kitchen
Hunslet Road Leeds LS10 1JQ
In-house bar and restaurant at The Tetley, the contemporary art space in the old brewing quarter, is a classy affair. It's partly the surroundings – a cool and clever refurb of the ground floor of the former Tetley Brewery HQ, where ceramic and steel meets antique panelling, distressed painted brickwork and cast-iron radiators retained from the lovely old Art Deco building. The tabletops are made from reclaimed wood from the brewery, while the modern bar has a USP all of its own – a pint of Tetley's in the place where it all began! For food it's Yorkshire-sourced breakfast, lunch and dinner in a contemporary 'kitchen' style, so expect doorstop gourmet sarnies, beef and ale stew (you know which ale. . . .), pot roast chicken, proper fish and chips and the like. There's a separate wood-panelled dining room with a few more sophisticated dishes (sea bass with shrimps and kale, for example, or a selection of steaks), but in practice you can pretty much eat what you want, where you want, when you want. We like it that you can just wander in, take in an exhibition, grab a decent coffee or come for a lazy lunch, and there are plenty of different spaces – armchairs to formal dining – that do different jobs and different times. Ours is so very definitely a pint of Tetley's in The Tetley.
