Eat Me
1 Hanover Road Scarborough YO11 1LS
Lucky old Scarborough – in Eat Me, it has the sort of fab, foodie-friendly café that every town should have. It's so popular in fact that it moved to bigger premises almost immediately, though only a few doors down the street (with the original shop at no.7 now serving as their deli outlet). The owners have stamped their passion and personality on a thirty-seater space around the back of the town's theatre that combines local sourcing and global tastes, so for breakfast, brunch or lunch expect an enticing menu that runs from giant fishfinger sandwiches and a daily quiche to a spicy bowl of ramen noodles. Our current fave dish is the 'Sloppy Joseph', a thick chunk of toast smothered in spicy ground beef and cheese. Chips are homemade and skin-on, cakes are from a local "cake lady" and tea is served in proper tea-pots, each with a tea cosy and accompanied by milk in old third-of-a-pint school milk bottles. Three nights a week Eat Me stays open for dinner, when the menu goes a bit more pan-Asian and Mediterranean – Thai noodles and curries to seasonal pot-pies and handmade burgers – but prices remain astonishingly good value (and you can bring your own wine).
