Yeehah! Camp Pinewood goes one better than other tipi sites, offering cowboy shacks and Wild West wagons, too. It’s easy to see why it’s a favourite spot for kids. But over the years it’s seen a curious transformation. Not just the westernification of its glamping getup, but also a host of other wonderful camping options, so that folk who want a more low-key stay are also welcomed along – as are well-behaved dogs.

As well as a number of pitches for your own tent, there are around a dozen pre-pitched tipis, equipped with futons and cube beds, rugs, outside picnic benches, and the luxury of electricity (so not exactly the cowboy lifestyle), while there are also shacks, cabins and wagons that come with double beds and modern furnishings, like toasters, microwaves and heating. A number of the glamping lodges and a couple of the tipis also have their own private hot tubs, the large cowboy camping shacks - large pods, really  – have their own verandahs, and the fantastic Woody's Western Wagons are old-fashioned caravans just like you see in all the Westerns. For families it’s a perfect escape. Kids disappear off into the wooded area at the bottom of the site, which has paths weaving around the trees, perfect for hide-and-seek, while a great little gift shop at reception sells Wild West toys for little and big kids too.

Of course glamping appeals to kids and adults alike, and there's a flip-side to Pinewood Park in that it has a surprisingly adult appeal, with outdoor weddings and private events all catered for and its wonderful location drawing in those seeking handy accommodation on the outskirts of Scarborough – it’s just a two-mile walk to the centre of town. For those looking for a holiday on the Yorkshire Coast, there are few more well-appointed spots.

All camping and caravanning pitches have electricity hook-ups if required. Tipis are on raised wooden decks, fully carpeted and furnished with a double and 2 singles, storage, an electric heater, light and 2 electric sockets. Woody's Western Wagons are the smallest of the Wild West accommodation and also the warmest. They feature fixed beds (1 double and 2 singles), lighting, an electric heater, small fridge, kettle, toaster and microwave. Cowboy Camping Shacks sleep families of 4, with a double and 2 singles and all the same furnishings, plus a table and 4 stools are provided on the covered veranda. The Cowboy Camping Cabin is the most spacious of the Wild West accommodation with a double and bunk beds, all the same furnishings and a covered veranda, while the Cowboy Camping Lodge is the most luxurious with a double and bunk beds, similar furnishings, plus luxury bedding provided and a welcome pack. All electricity is metered and each unit has a picnic bench out front to use. There's a modern shower and toilet block and alfresco washing-up sinks. Extensive recycling is part of a generally green ethos. No campfires unless organised as part of a group booking.

Getting There

From York, approx 3 miles from Scarborough, take the 1st exit off the roundabout (Seamer, Ayton). At the next roundabout, take the 1st exit,(straight on). Take the first right onto Irton Moor Lane and carry on and turn right at the top. Continue up the hill until the speed limit changes to 40 MPH. The site is immediately there on your left. Sat Nav Users: using the postcode is fine until you are half a mile from Pinewood; it then instructs you to turn into a road signposted 'Irton Caravan Site' – do not do this. Instead carry on towards Scarborough on the A170.

Take the train or bus to Scarborough town centre. From there a taxi is usually just less than £10 to Pinewood Park. Once unpacked/unloaded it is easy to walk there and back in the daytime, although it is uphill coming back!
