Midsummer Barns – Moon & Dove – are so close to the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales that you have views of both from the windows. Situated in Cumbria’s Lyvennet Valley, this pair of self-catering holiday homes are the result of the careful conversion of a 17th-century Westmorland barn. Once used for storing grain, they now each offer a luxurious place to stay in a peaceful countryside village. They're ideally situated on the eastern edge of the Lake District and just on the northern edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park – and, to make it even better, there’s a highly acclaimed pub serving exquisite food just up the road.

Each of these adjacent barns offers accommodation for up to six in three bedrooms. They're ideal when hired together for larger groups of up to 12 people (especially families) who want space to spread out, but work just as well for individual families or small groups of friends who can plump for one or the other. Moon Barn has a topsy-turvy appeal, with an open-plan living space on the first floor, meaning there’s a great vantage point over the countryside. Meanwhile, Dove's living area is on the ground floor and the dining table has a special spot, providing panoramic views due to the surrounding curved bay windows.

This feels like a restoration that’s been done well, with both barns finished to a high spec. A Grade-II listing within a conservation area means the stone walls have been preserved, but the interiors are all brand new – fresh, clean and contemporary but without being in-your-face modern. Each property has a bespoke hand-painted kitchen, SMEG range cookers, and Scandi log burners. These are complemented by limestone flags, wooden flooring and Herdwick carpets throughout. The cherry on top is the exposed wooden beams, crafted using wood sourced from the family’s farm. Colours are mostly gentle blues and greens, bringing the tones of the surrounding landscape indoors. Whether you opt for Moon, Dove, or both, you can make the most of super-fast WiFi and Netflix on the TVs. Each bed has an ultra-comfy Harrison Spinks mattress and is dressed with Egyptian cotton linen. In the bathrooms, you'll find powerful Hansgrohe showers, fluffy towels and Bramley toiletries.

Outside, each barn has its own terrace and shares a walled orchard – legacy of the farm's past. Beyond the drystone walls, your eyes are led across acres of lush countryside to the iconic Lake District fells. Yet despite the feeling of rural bliss, Midsummer Barns is very much part of the village of King’s Meaburn. Walk out the front door and The White Horse Inn is within sight. Heading there at least once during your stay is essential (especially for Chef Tom's incredible chocolate mousse or one of Demi’s famous cocktails!). There’s also plenty of good walking, cycling, wild swimming, and saunas in the nearby countryside, and plenty more in the Lakes and the Dales – Ullswater, Blencathra and High Cup Nick are a few of the natural highlights within easy reach, not to mention ancient Hadrian's Wall. Meanwhile, Appleby-in-Westmorland and Penrith are some of the local market towns not to be missed.

We will definitely be returning

We had a truly excellent stay at the Moon Barn. Great location, very quiet, just what we wanted. Caroline and Chris are great hosts and were always on hand to answer any questions. Very clean, and so wonderfully converted.

More than we expected

Dove barn was more than we expected. The backdrop was beautiful and idyllic. Perfect for walking and cycling. The house itself was amazing. All done to a high standard, with a very homely and cozy feel to it. Caroline was very friendly and always helpful with any queries that we had. There are also different recycling bins outside the house, which is very handy. We would definitely recommend staying here and, if we ever plan to have another holiday in the lake district, we will definitely be returning here.

I just wish we could stay longer!

Caroline was a wonderful host; very friendly and welcoming. Dove Barn was a beautiful location for our young family to spend a week. The barn is beautiful and extremely comfortable, having been furnished to a very high standard. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and also Caroline’s recommendation for dinner at the lovely White Horse Inn just down the road. Many thanks Caroline.

Simply stunning

Caroline’s barn is simply stunning. Immaculate interior beautifully thought out with vintage and modern furniture, and everything you could need in the kitchen. The views were breathtaking and we spent a very special Christmas here. We hope to revisit sometime soon!
