Midsummer Barns are so close to the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales that you have views of both from the windows. Situated in Cumbria’s Lyvennet Valley, this pair of self-catering holiday homes are the result of the careful conversion of a 17th-century Westmorland barn. Once used for storing grain, they now each offer a luxurious place to stay in a peaceful countryside village. They're ideally situated on the eastern edge of the Lake District and just on the northern edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park – and, to make it even better, there’s a highly acclaimed pub serving exquisite food just up the road.
Each of these adjacent barns offers accommodation for up to six in three bedrooms. They're ideal when hired together for larger groups (especially families) who want space to spread out, but work just as well for individual families or small groups of friends who can plump for one or the other. Both are finished to a high spec: Dove Barn offers a traditional layout while Moon Barn has a topsy-turvy appeal. Its open-plan living space is on the first floor, meaning there’s a great vantage point over the countryside. Meanwhile, Dove’s dining table also has a special spot – providing panoramic views due to the surrounding curved bay windows.
This feels like a restoration that’s been done right. A Grade-II listing within a conservation area means the stone walls have been preserved, but the interiors are all brand new – fresh, clean and contemporary but without being in-your-face modern. Each cottage has a bespoke hand-painted kitchen, SMEG range cookers, and Scandi log burners. These are complemented by limestone flags, wooden flooring and Herdwick carpets throughout. The cherry on top is the exposed wooden beams, crafted using wood sourced from the family’s farm. Colours are mostly gentle blues and greens, bringing the tones of the surrounding landscape indoors.
