To reach Hop Pickers Rural Retreat, you leave the M5 somewhere south of Worcester and simply head for the hills — the Malvern Hills that is. Your journey takes you along ever-narrowing roads until you can go no further. It’s here, tucked at the end of a country lane, that you find The Hop Pickers Barn – a dog-friendly, self-catering holiday home in a converted 17th-century barn within walking distance of the Malvern Hills. It’s a great base from which to explore – both homely and historic – but it’s also got an electric hydrotherapy hot tub. And a games room. And a swimming pool in the summer. It all adds up to a list of facilities that’s longer than you might expect from a holiday cottage sleeping five.
The barn stands on a smallholding that covers nine acres, within which there’s also a woodland walk, a wildlife hide, a fun tennis court and three ponds. It’s home to chickens, ducks, Shetland ponies and your hosts – Louise, David and daughter Rebecca. There’s alternative accommodation too: a log cabin, a shepherd’s hut and a summer bell tent. It’s possible to hire the whole lot together to sleep up to 13, but the place works just as well for individual bookings. Either way, it definitely has a family feel. All ages love meeting the animals and kids love the heated outdoor pool so much that you may struggle to get them out of it. The temptation of table tennis or Scalextric in the games room may just about do it.
Both of the barn's bedrooms, along with the open-plan living space, are on the first floor, under exposed beams and eaves. The effect in the combined kitchen, dining and living room is impressive, with a huge window letting in plenty of light. The bedrooms feel cosier but still spacious. The master has a king-size bed and a single as well as room for a cot. The second is a twin room which can be configured as a super-king. It’s warm, well-equipped and has a country-cottage appeal that suits the space very well, with reminders of the local area on the walls and in the welcome pack.
This is a great place for anyone who loves the countryside, with good walks, farmers' markets and three pubs within a few miles, not to mention a wild swimming lake next door. It’s equidistant from Malvern and Worcester, with plenty of English Heritage and National Trust sites nearby including (nearest and most notably) Elgar’s Birthplace, The Firs, just five miles down the road.
