It’s a two-minute walk to the closest seafood restaurant, a ten-minute walk to the sea and a half-day round-trip to the top of the nearest mountain. Major House in Newport not only puts you in prime position in the Pembrokeshire National Park, it offers a premium level of self-catering stay too. Sleeping up to eight guests in four spacious and stylish bedrooms, this is an ideal choice for larger groups or families who want to sample everything that Pembrokeshire has to offer.
Situated on a small lane, just off the main road through lovely Newport, Major House is surprisingly spacious for its central location. And the interiors behind the whitewashed Grade II-listed walls and sash windows are surprising as well. Classical style gives way to contemporary elegance as you step in through the front door. Clean lines, modern furniture and a limited colour palette of greys and blues flow through the downstairs rooms. These include two lounges: one is warmed by a woodburner, the other is snug and cosy as can be, with a leather chair, velveteen sofa and warm lighting. The kitchen is lighter and airier thanks to its connection to the outdoors via bi-folding doors, and it features a long dining table and a sociable island with a breakfast bar, and high-end appliances, some of them in a handy utility room.
Upstairs, the bedrooms each have their own signature style. The master bedroom combines dark painted panels with gently-hued pinks in its en-suite shower and loo, the second double has a feature wall that’s organically green, and just as much care has gone into the two twins. Each of the bedrooms up here is designed and finished as neatly as the shared spaces downstairs, but they’re softer and warmer, as bedrooms should be.
There’s a relaxed feel to the whole house; somewhere you can breeze about in. And that goes for Newport as well. The town’s cafés, shops and restaurants are within easy walking distance. Try Bras at Fronlas for Pembrokeshire-roasted coffee, Tides Kitchen for fresh seafood at dinner. Newport is on the Nevern Estuary, with the coastal path leading to beaches in both directions, and Mynydd Carningli on the edge of the Preseli Hills, towering behind. Walking, watersports and whiling away hours with loved ones are equally appealing ways to spend time here on the Pembrokeshire coast.
