With the iconic Dales and much-fabled Moors as its neighbours to the west and north respectively, The Yorkshire Wolds are often overlooked by visitors to 'God's Own Country'. But more's the pity for them, for what beckons is one of England's great landscapes – an alluring blend of picture-postcard villages, undulating pastures, untamed moorlands and the charming seaside towns of the East coast. Just ask David Hockney – this romantic setting the muse for the Bridlington-based painter's latest artistic renaissance. Smack bang between Hockney's East Riding residence and the Edwardian coastal resort of Filey (some 5 minutes from the stunning beach at Hunmanby Gap) lies the lovely Dale Farm.

When Liz Halliday and family acquired Dale Farm they wasted no time in restoring the 200-year-old farmhouse to its former glory. With true Yorkshire grit, hard-graft, and a keen attention to detail, Liz and husband Paul created the three gorgeous glamping cabins that nestle amongst the farm's woodland, to augment the main self-catering cottage and studios. These charming, timber-beamed lodges, perched atop a spacious deck, make for a perfect romantic retreat. Though fully-insulated and double-glazed, the cabins are bright and airy. Kitted out with cute interior touches and everything you could need for your stay, the wood-burning stove transforms these into a cosy cabin of loveliness – we'd love to stay here under a blanket of snow.

In addition is the über-luxurious Summerhouse. Ingeniously converted from an old cowshed by Paul, The Summerhouse comes with a fully-equipped kitchen, spacious shower room, a comfy double bed (plus twin camping cots), and spacious open plan living room. Ok, so it's pretty light on the 'amping' but this glam offering is ideal for those less enamoured with a night under canvas. Plus with a wood-burning stove, BBQ and direct access to Dale Farm's lovely gardens, you can still experience the simple pleasures of staying in the Great Outdoors.

The most recent addition is a romantic 'treehouse' cabin for two in the trees, which features en-suite faciltiies and a quirky outdoor kitchen with deck, barbecue, sink and seating. The treehouse is fully insulated, double glazed and fitted with a log burning stove so you will be warm and cosy all year round. Enjoy a breakfast picnic on the balcony and chat to the woodpeckers.

The grounds are lovely, with a pond, meadow, courtyard and gardens (including a kitchen garden for all your veg and herbs) which guests are positively encouraged to explore. Fires aren't allowed but there are chimineas and braziers dotted around, as well as a massive communal firepit. At night the lack of light pollution makes for unspoilt star-studded skies, soundtracked by the hooting owls in the copse canopy. Stake your claim to hammock to soak up this tranquil twilight scene.

Nearby

Dale Farm is ideally situated for exploring the best of Yorkshire. The village of Hunmanby is known as the gateway to the Yorkshire Wolds beloved by David Hockney. Hop on the Hockney trail to explore the landscapes that inspired some of the great man's work. If you're feeling particularly energetic, why not have a crack at the 79 mile Yorkshire Wolds Way? The farm is a short drive from the magnificent Yorkshire Coastline and the 5 mile sweep of Filey Bay, voted best beach in Britain 2019. The little Edwardian seaside town of Filey is great for sailing and sea fishing. Just south of Filey you will find RSPB Bempton, easily the best place in England to see seabirds, Flamborough head with its famous lighthouse and Bridlington makes for a fun day trip.  Further north up the coast you can visit Scarborough with its castle, amusements and famous spa, the smugglers' village of Robin Hoods Bay and, of course, stunning Whitby with its ruined abbey and tales of Dracula. The North York Moors National Park is practically on the doorstep; you can take a steam train through the park (yes the one where Harry Potter was filmed.) Also in the park, Dalby Forest offers world-class mountain biking trails, plus a Go Ape! (0843 770 3911) high-wire course. If you fancy a day in the city, ancient York is less than an hour away by car or scenic train journey and should not be missed.

Food & Drink

All the accommodation is self-catering but you can order one of Paul's delicious breakfast butties delivered to your door. A mile away in Hunmanby village, you'll find a decent selection of shops, pubs and takeaways including a great fish and chip shop, the Captain's Table and the famous Piebald Inn where you can choose from over 50 varieties of pie! The beach cafe at Hunmanby Gap is a great place to stop for tea and cake after a long day on the beach. Filey has a great selection of restaurants and pubs including the tiny Cobblers' Arms, a real ale lovers paradise and firm favourite for the best Indian food, the Monsoon.

Getting There

Follow the A64 in an eastwards direction until you get to  the roundabout at Staxton, then take the second exit (A1039). Turn right on to White Gate Hill. Turn right on to Hall Park Road (Hunmanby Hall is on your left) and continue across  the crossroads on to Bartindale Road. Dale Farm is about a mile down this road on the right hand side in the dip. In summer there is a trough of red geraniums at the end of the drive.

Frequent trains from north and south on the east coast mainline to York. Then take the Transpennine Express to Seamer (this is also the direct route from Manchester). Liz can collect from the station if required. Alternatively, take another little train right in to Hunmanby.
