Back in the early 2000s, the White Horse in Moretonhampstead was a rough and ready outpost of the Wild West Country. However, the intrepid Malene and Nigel made the move from London and took over this 18th-century inn over fifteen years ago, rebranding it as The Horse to pursue their dream of running a friendly local pub with top-quality rooms and imaginative food. The financial crash and Covid led to the accommodation being delayed, but their two en-suite bedrooms are now ready and waiting for weary travellers and indolent weekenders, and The Horse has become the go-to place to stay for those wanting to explore the moors and all Dartmoor has to offer.

This isn't your standard chintzy Devon guesthouse. The rooms combine cool Sixties/Seventies chic with a cosy vibe, along with hints of contemporary sculpture and exotic splashes of colour (check out the proud pelican in one of the bathrooms). Thoughtfully designed, they boast super-king-size beds, tea- and coffee-making facilities (with coffee machines), good WiFi and 50” flatscreen TVs. Alongside that, there are stunning en-suite bathrooms and iconic Danish fixtures and décor from Malene's home city of Copenhagen, plus all sorts of unique details that make you feel like you're stepping from a working Dartmoor town into a curated, cosmopolitan and ultra-stylish exclusive hideaway.

Downstairs, there’s a spacious and welcoming front bar and ample dining space, with a back room for special functions and an enclosed courtyard for al fresco imbibing. The spaces partner well with the original, exciting food that emerges from the kitchen, both as bespoke breakfasts with the finest local ingredients and excellent evening meals – if you're staying, you'll want to sample both. The menu echoes Nigel's love of Italian cuisine and culture, nurtured by his quest to find the perfect pizza many years ago. It's complemented by a good selection of local ales and gins, and if you're lucky, you may catch one of many regular events, with a monthly local musicians showcase and a popular folk night featuring among various other happenings. An oasis on the Moor, this Horse is definitely making a name for itself – and there aren't too many better bases for exploring this corner of Dartmoor.
