Tucked in among the canopy of a Devon woodland, Nymetwood Treehouses is a perfect indulgent hideaway. These super luxurious cabins-in-the-canopy feature super king-size beds, outdoor roll-top baths and velvet sofas in front of log burners. Set in 20 acres of woodland, meadows and orchards, this is a great place to simply savour, but as it’s just north of Dartmoor National Park it’s well placed for exploration too. Our advice? Book long enough for both.
In fact, there’s a three-night booking minimum on weekends which is just long enough to slow down and appreciate the setting. It’ll give you time to tune in to the tapping of woodpeckers in the surrounding trees and perhaps to spot a deer or two grazing below your verandah. The site is full of wildlife, encouraged by owners James and Cherie, who have planted hundreds of trees and re-wilded some of the surrounding meadows. The same care was used in the slow and sustainable build of the two modern treehouses on site.
Sleeping up to two adults and two children each, these are very much contemporary cabins at canopy level rather than rustic structures built around trees. Their dark timber-clad exterior walls give way to a light-filled, open-plan living space. A high ceiling, glass front and naturally-hued timber combine to make sure of that. But they're cosy too, with the log burner, a modern kitchenette (with dishwasher) and the mezzanine bedroom above. There’s a Scandinavian feel of clean lines and simplicity but these cabins pack in a lot and come incredibly well equipped. You’ll have games and books but there's also a Smart TV, digital radio and Bluetooth speaker. There's EV charging outside, WiFi throughout, and of course, a modern en-suite shower room in addition to the outdoor bath.
It’s not just the living space and verandah outside that look out on the trees; the bedroom and bathroom do too, so you’re always connected to nature. For more of that, step outside and explore. There are pathways through the woodland and orchard on site if you don’t want to go too far, and the edge of Dartmoor, with its wild swimming spots, granite tors and wild moorland, is only six miles to the south. One of its most popular places, the Teign Gorge and Castle Drogo, are not much further than that.
