Mill End Hotel offers 21 individually designed rooms, six acres of gardens, lounges warmed by open fires and elegant afternoon teas. It sounds every inch the country house hotel – and indeed it is. But it’s a very Dartmoor version, embracing the outdoors by welcoming walkers and dog owners to stay. Its rooms and two-Rosette restaurant occupy a renovated 15th-century flour mill that was once powered by the River Teign, and it's this position on the riverbank that puts it on one of the best walking routes in the whole of the national park: one that takes you to Teign Gorge and Castle Drogo, just a mile or so away.
Mill End is elegant and stylish, but it’s not at all stuffy. For the muddy wellies and paws who love the location, there’s a handy boot room entrance which means you can get cleaned up before entering the hotel. There, you’ll find three cosy guest lounges which are classic in style but with a few quirky touches. This feeling carries through to most of the guest rooms, some of which have bold feature walls that add character to their comfort. Others feel more traditional, but all share a standard of comfort that's elevated further by quality linen and towels, well-chosen toiletries, tea- and coffee-making facilities and homemade biscuits.
There’s a real range of rooms and suites to choose from here. Some are dog-friendly and some are fido-free. There are ground-floor rooms that open directly to the gardens and there’s a first-floor suite with a balcony. Some of the suites work well for families and others are simply luxuriously spacious for a couple to spread out in. One or two have a free-standing bath.
With a destination restaurant downstairs, eating in is the sensible option for dinner. A focus on provenance means you get a real taste of the area to complement the days you’ll spend out exploring. The Two Moors Way passes the hotel gardens and leads you along the riverbank – in one direction to the market town of Chagford and in the other towards Castle Drogo above the wooded Teign Gorge. A five-mile circular route takes you along the top and back down through the trees or vice-versa. Tackling it is the ideal way to build an appetite for the Devon afternoon tea that’s on offer back at this boutique hotel that really makes the most of its location in the heart of Dartmoor National Park.
