The small Devon town of Moretonhampstead, right on the edge of Dartmoor, is the perfect location for a dog friendly pub, and the White Hart doesn’t let you down, with dogs staying free in their 20 cosy bedrooms and made very comfortable in their public areas as well. A historic old coaching inn, the rooms here are all different and have been updated fairly recently, with flatscreen Freeview TVs tea-and coffee-making facilities and en-suite bathrooms with baths and showers. Dogs aren’t allowed in the restaurant but they serve the same menu in the cosy bar, where there’s a roaring fire for them to lie in front of after long day’s traversing the moor and a selection of local ales for their thirsty owners. The menu is perfectly pitched at weary walkers: short and sweet and very local, with Dartmoor beef, lamb and venison and local fish alongside pub classics like burgers and pies. Moretonhampstead itself is a pleasant town and very much the gateway to Dartmoor, with its countess footpaths to explore: try the recently opened ‘Wray Valley Trail’, which follows the old railway line for around 6.5 miles from Moretonhampstead to Newton Abbot, via the impossibly picturesque Dartmoor village of Lustleigh.
