If you're looking for a place to stay in the Cotswolds but prefer somewhere a little more off the beaten track, the Five Alls is a perfect spot. Located in the tiny village of Filkins (around a 10-minute drive from Burford), it's not only a tremendous country inn situated in a picturesque village, but it also serves excellent food and is well-placed for the offbeat, undiscovered countryside hereabouts, with lots of good walks on your doorstep.

Above all, the Five Alls is a great village local, a lovely 18th-century pub with an old-school bar made of Cotswold stone and a cosy set of indoor spaces, plus a garden outside. The pub has nine guest rooms – three in the main building, and a further six in a separate block behind the pub, built by the previous owners. The Cottage Garden rooms in particular are extremely spacious, with super-king-size beds and lots of room to make yourself at home, and there's also a family suite that can accommodate two adults and up to three small children. All the rooms have been completely refurbished and are cosy, well-decorated and comfortable, with quirky local artwork, flatscreen TVs, high-quality mattresses and bed linen, and large bathrooms with walk-in showers and Bramley toiletries.

The pub serves dinner every day except Sunday, when they offer a range of roasts, and lunch from Wednesday to Saturday, and you can expect to eat high-quality pub food at very affordable prices – good steaks and fish and chips, along with excellent fish, lamb and usually a selection of veggie options. Under the eye of new owner Tom Downing, formerly of Stadhampton's Crazy Bear, service is on-point and super-friendly, and there's often the chance to spot one of Five Alls celebrity locals, who regularly drop by for dinner or Sunday lunch. Beyond the pub, take some time to explore the nearby church and village (home to its very own outdoor swimming pool), and be sure to make the most of those walks and the surrounding countryside in all its glory. By car, you're just a few minutes from the Cotswold Wildlife Park in one direction, and William Morris's house – Kelmscott Manor – and the Thames long-distance path in the other.
