A foodie burger pub with gorgeous accommodation and hip flourishes might sound an improbable mix. But at this 16th-century inn the combination has proved winning. The New Inn at honey-stone Coln St Aldwyns is a lockdown success story, thanks to a duo known as Baz & Fred. Aka Harry Henriques and Fred Hicks, they have been making waves in the Cotswolds, challenging the gastropub concept with simple, well-priced food. First they launched The Stump pizza pub near Cirencester, then, in 2020, they revamped the New Inn, opening that summer to huge applause. Décor in the public spaces is down-to-earth yet rustic-stylish, with open fires, retro church chairs and settles. There’s a dedicated bar area if you just want a pint, as well as a series of restaurant rooms complete with a negroni bar. Poster art on the walls adds funky touches. The menu presents affordable, handmade burgers as well as a small plates and a couple of other seasonal mains. The pub gives on to a courtyard where interconnecting buildings house the 14 generously large bedrooms. Swathed in soothing greens and browns they offer understated luxury with sink-into beds and eye-catching features such as, in one room, a mirror created from an antique door.
