We have always been keen on the Plough's sister pub, the excellent Five Alls at Filkins near Burford, run by former London restaurateurs Sebastian and Lana Snow. We were delighted to hear that they were opening The Plough, in Kelmscott, near Lechlade. It's the same enticing formula, and is equally well executed: great food, in a cosy old pub, with a group of beautifully and thoughtfully furnished guest rooms upstairs – seven doubles, one single – that have been refurbished to a standard that is chic but also eminently comfortable, with comfy kingsize beds, walk-in showers or baths and great views over the surrounding countryside and the village. Downstairs is a proper pub, where plenty of people come just to have a pint or two (they offer a good range of real ales, homemade lemonade and a decent wine list), but they also serve excellent food that's cooked by Matt Read, who used to be in charge at the Snows' place in London. Kelmscott is a great place to stay too: within easy reach of London, but it has a fabulous get-away-from-it-all feel, with lovely walking (not least on the Thames Path just a few minutes' away) and cycling. You're also a hop, skip and a jump away from William Morris's country house at Kelmscott Manor, and Blenheim Palace and the Cotswold Wildlife Park are just a short drive away. All in all, a great place for a romantic weekend escape! They've also recently reopened The Bull Hotel, it sits invitingly on the market square of the small and pleasant Cotswolds town of Fairford.
