The Tawny may have a reception, a restaurant and room service but it rather stretches the definition of a hotel. That’s because, after check-in, guests are dispersed via leafy pathways rather than carpeted corridors; and instead of boxy rooms clustered under one roof, The Tawny is made up of huts, cabins and treehouses tucked away among trees and lakes. All of them have the facilities you’d expect of a regular hotel room, but none of the immediate neighbours – and each delivers a healthy dose of nature thanks to an outdoor spa bath and its unique setting on this lavish and bucolic Staffordshire estate.

At the heart of the hotel is its well-regarded restaurant: The Plumicorn. It’s a strikingly modern, glass-fronted affair and a quick check of the Oxford English will reveal that, yes, its unusual name is a real word – one that describes the elongated eyebrow feathers of an owl! Somehow the idea of this curious embellishment is rather fitting here: nature with a bit of a flourish and perhaps just a touch of magic, mixing botanical prints with plush upholstery under a high ceiling with huge windows, and with a gorgeous setting at the head of the estate's largest lake, just above the hotel's outdoor heated pool.

The landscaped gardens around the restaurant are home to a quirky collection of Victorian follies, while the lodgings have been just as carefully planned and just as beautifully designed as the restaurant. These range from the simple Wildwood Huts which sleep two in whitewashed, timber-clad Scandi style, to the grand Hillside Treehouses with their private verandahs, and the cedar-clad Retreats with sunken baths. Whichever you choose, you’ll have a bed that’s no less than king-size, en-suite facilities, a Smart TV, WiFi, a complimentary mini-bar, coffee machine and fluffy bathrobes to get you to that spa bath outside.

There are bikes to borrow, walking routes to follow and there’s always that heated outdoor pool. Bookable extras include private yoga sessions, treatments in the spa and mindful stargazing events. With breakfast included and lunch and dinner available in The Plumicorn, there’s little reason to leave the estate. Should you want to, though, the vastly different pleasures of the Peak District and Alton Towers are both within a half-hour's drive.

Best-in-class hospitality

My weekend at the Tawny Hotel was a dream come true. I have a background in working in 5* and luxury hotels, so I have always been confident that I know how to deliver best-in-class hospitality - but from the moment I walked into the reception, I realised that The Tawny operates at a whole other level. I was in awe of the team. A very lovely gentleman made me a cup of tea while we waited for a receptionist to be available to check us in. The receptionist came over to where we were sitting and provided a check-in that was seamless, informative and friendly. We stayed in a Wildwood Hut, it was beautifully decorated and laid out. The mini bar is so generous, we enjoyed the prosecco in our outdoor spa bath! That moment in the bath, looking up at the stars, drinking prosecco, is definitely going to be a moment which stays with me and my partner for a very long time. The Plumicorn was simply divine. Once again, the service blew me away. I asked for a wine recommendation, and after explaining my tastes to the waitress, she brought me over a sublime choice. The next day breakfast was scrummy. From there we used the bikes and went off to explore the estate. There were endless hidden gems and beautiful moments to be had (even if I did lose horrendously at chess!) We ended our visit by using the pool, and we both said that we will definitely be back at The Tawny. Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart, I can't wait to visit again.

Can I live here forever?

I had an absolutely incredible experience! My partner surprised me with a weekend getaway for my 30th birthday, and it was nothing short of amazing. From the impeccable service of the staff to the cozy and comfortable rooms, the breathtaking views, the delectable food, and the delightful drinks—every aspect surpassed my expectations. The entire weekend was a perfect blend of relaxation and enjoyment. I found myself not wanting to leave, and now I'm eagerly counting down the days until I can return and relive those wonderful moments again!

Restored my faith in the hotel experience

I've stayed in many hotels this year, some rated as 5 star in various locations including some very well-known establishments and I had come to the conclusion that the hotel stay was over and air b n b is the way forward. I have had cause to complain at every single one, wondering if it was just me!! Then I stayed at The Tawny and was reminded how amazing a hotel can make you feel. Every single person is friendly from the reception to the cleaning staff. Every detail is considered from wellies to borrow at reception to fresh milk in the fridge. It's also very beautiful and perfect for a romantic break or a weekend escape to the countryside.
